Introductions
Body and Soul is a four piece jazz band based in Suffolk, East Anglia. Its members’
musical backgrounds include jazz, latin, funk, rock, folk, classical, and dance.
They play frequently throughout Suffolk, Essex, Norfolk and London and travel elsewhere
in the UK when required.

Jack has literally circled the globe dozens
of times with his sax, playing for 20 years
aboard the QEII. His vast experience
includes television (he played on the original
BBC “Come Dancing” programme, radio
(live for years on the Terry Wogan show), and all sorts of other high profile events.
He led his own big-band for many years, and they enjoyed a long term residency at
Blackpool’s famous ballroom.
As well as this, Jack is a composer,
arranger, lyricist and playwright who has
written a complete musical show.

Anne Burton: piano and vocals
Anne has played with various groups in
many different styles over the years, ranging
from theatre and dance groups to folk bands.
She presently plays jazz and classical music
with Essex based Michael Spearman in a violin/guitar duo called Atmospherics, is
the Fiddle and whistle player in the popular Irish folk/rock group Fiddlers Elbow,
and sings with the all-female Decibelles.
As well as her work in bands, Anne performs as a solo pianist/singer. She has released
several CD’s and is an accomplished songwriter, arranger and lyricist. She also
teaches piano and singing.
Keith Virley: drums
Without doubt, one of the most respected
figures on the East Anglian jazz scene, Keith
began by playing popular and dance music
with big bands. He then appeared with his
own quartet at Ipswich’s Albion Mills Jazz
Club.
Following success with various residencies
playing with the likes of Dave Bishop, Keith
went on to provide backing for many top
British and American recording artists who
guested at the Ipswich Jazz club during the
1980‘s.
Keith continues to play regularly with a large
number of different musicians. He brings a
wealth of experience and talent to Body and
Soul.
Rob Palmer: bass
After several years in rock and pop
bands, Rob started playing jazz in
1988, eventually moving to Surrey
and playing with several big names:Jim Mullen, Stan Sultzman, Iain Ballamy,Hank Shaw,
Janusz Carmello, Roy Williams & Campbell Burnap.
His move to Suffolk in 2002 brought a change
of musical direction and Rob regularly plays
with legendary Ipswich funk band Swagger and
Suffolk based Latin bands Albino Cubana and
BossaSuperNova.
The jazz is never very far away, however and,
in addition to Body and Soul, Rob continues to
play with both local musicians and national
figures like guitarists Nick Page (Humphrey
Lyttelton, Don Rendell, Alan Skidmore) &
Nigel Price (James Taylor Quartet) and with
saxophonist Stewart Curtis (Nik Kershaw).
Rob has played international jazz festivals from
Brecon to Vienne and had his work played on
national radio and television.
